The Alfred Benzon Foundation was established in 1952 by Bøje Benzon, (1891-1976) D.Sc. and director of the pharmaceutical company A/S Alfred Benzon, established in 1863 by his grandfather, Alfred Nicolai Benzon, as the first pharmaceutical company in Denmark. Bøje Benzon donated his entire shareholding in the company to the Foundation, the aim of which is to support the medical and pharmaceutical sciences and relevant basic natural sciences.

The Board of Trustees of the Foundation determines how to apply the annual income. Since 1987 a long held wish to establish research fellowships has been fulfilled. At present the Foundation mainly supports one international symposium a year and a number of fellowships with emphasis on international exchange. Applications for symposia and fellowships can be made only in collaboration with Danish scientists.

At the end of the year 2009, the Foundation had held 56 symposia and supported more than 200 fellows, the vast majority for three years.

The Alfred Benzon Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002. The occasion was marked by awarding honorary prizes to four internationally recognized scientists, Drs. Eric Lander, Jiri Bartek, Jiri Lukas, and Hans Bräuner-Osborne.

Unfortunately, no new Fellowships will be granted in 2010.

There will be no Benzon Symposium in 2011, but a Benzon Symposium is being planned for 2012.
